In 2024, the UHPC industry in China experienced rapid growth, achieving dual breakthroughs in technology and industrialization.
The "Report on the Technology and Application Development of UHPC in China in 2024" released by the UHPC Branch of the China Concrete and Cement Products Association shows that the total consumption of the UHPC industry in China reached 200,400 m³, an increase of 37% compared to 2023, with a compound annual growth rate of 46% for six consecutive years. With its ultra-high performance (compressive strength ≥ 150MPa, tensile strength ≥ 7.5MPa), lightweight characteristics (self-weight reduced by 30%-50%), and low-carbon features throughout the life cycle, UHPC has achieved large-scale applications in fields such as bridges, buildings, wind power, and municipal engineering, becoming an important engine for promoting the high-quality and sustainable development of infrastructure construction.

  1. 1.In the Bridge Field: A Comprehensive Innovation of the UHPC Structural System
     Non-welded Orthotropic Composite Bridge Deck: The new bridge deck structure developed by Hunan University adopts a combination of steel profiles and UHPC plates, eliminating the traditional welding process. Its fatigue resistance is increased by 200%. It was first applied to the ramp bridge of Changsha West High-speed Railway Station (with a span of 55m), and the construction cost was reduced by 50%.
     Breakthrough in Long-span Steel-UHPC Composite Beams: The Wuhan Shuangliu Yangtze River Bridge uses a lightweight UHPC (LUHPC) bridge deck (with a unit weight of 2100kg/m³ and a strength of 115MPa), solving the contradiction between the self-weight and durability of cross-river bridges. The Hubei Guanyinsi Yangtze River Bridge applies a high-strength UHPC bridge deck with a compressive strength exceeding 200MPa and an elastic modulus of 53.7GPa, setting a domestic record for the highest strength application.
     Industrialization of Prefabricated UHPC Bridges: Gansu Jiaoshe Zhiyuan has built an intelligent production line for pretensioned prestressed UHPC I-beams, forming a product system with a span of 8-22m. 15 UHPC lightweight I-beam bridges have been built, reducing the carbon emissions of the entire bridge by 60%.

  2. 2.In the Wind Power Field: The Height of UHPC Hybrid Towers Refreshes the Global Record
     Shanghai Fengling New Energy and Jianhua Building Materials have respectively built UHPC-steel hybrid towers with hub center heights of 185m and 190m. By using the ultra-high density of UHPC, they have solved the problems of vibration fatigue of traditional steel towers and cracking of concrete towers, promoting the development of wind power in low-wind-speed areas.

  3. 3.In the Building and Municipal Fields: Diversification of UHPC Product Scenarios
     Curtain Walls and Decoration: The 3,285m² dome UHPC curtain wall of the fourth phase of Galaxy Macau (with a single panel weighing 7.9 tons) and the 20,611m² irregular curved UHPC exterior wall of the Maitreya Culture Museum in Fenghua, Ningbo (with a panel length of 9.5m and a thickness of 35mm) have become models of the integration of architectural aesthetics and functionality.
     Municipal Components: Products such as the 52.5km UHPC guardrails on the Shanxi Fenxi Expressway (resistant to 600 freeze-thaw cycles) and the UHPC fireproof brackets in the comprehensive utility tunnel in Guangzhou have promoted the upgrading of traditional concrete components to high durability and maintenance-free.

     Aiming at the problems of traditional concrete columns being heavy (40-55kg) and prone to corrosion, copper-plated micro-wire steel fibers (with a diameter of 0.12mm and an aspect ratio of 80) have helped develop UHPC columns with a cross-section of 5cm×5cm and a weight of only 12kg. The compressive strength is ≥ 130MPa, and the salt freeze resistance can reach 600 cycles without damage. The construction efficiency is increased by 3 times, and the life cycle cost is reduced by 40%.

  3. 2.Prefabricated UHPC Bridge Decks: A Key Technological Breakthrough in Bridge Construction over Water
     In the project of the Third East Passage in Xiamen, Ganzhou Daye supplied steel fibers (tensile strength ≥ 2850MPa) and supported the production of UHPC panels for the cross-sea trestle bridge (with a thickness of 8cm and a span of 4m). Compared with traditional steel trestle bridges, the weight is reduced by 30%, the impermeability grade is ≥ P20, and the service life exceeds 50 years.

Although the application volume of UHPC continues to grow, the industry still faces challenges such as low-price competition and lagging standardization. The report calls for strengthening quality supervision throughout the entire process, promoting the revision of the national standard for "Ultra-high Performance Concrete," and establishing an integrated standard system for materials, design, and construction.
